Commonwealth
Middle College
The
concept of a "middle college" is brand new to Kentucky and the very
first one in the state is opening this fall at West Kentucky Community
and Technical College. Principal Donna Wear is enthusiastic
about the new program, which will allow high school juniors from Marshall
and McCracken Counties to earn their high school diploma, along with
36 college credit hours, tuition-free.
Only 50 students were
accepted into the program for the first year, but Wear fully expects
to have more than 100 students for 2010. "The next step is to refine
and expand" the Commonwealth Middle College to include more area school
districts, yet keep the enrollment to a manageable number.
The students will spend
their entire school day from 8 am until 2 pm at WCKTC, taking both
high school courses and college level courses, along with regular
WCKTC students. At $363 per college class, the free 36 credit hours
can mean a savings of nearly $4,000 a year per student. Free textbooks
are also being offered through a grant from the Ken Lay Foundation.
Wear says it is a real
boon for students who may be first generation college hopefuls with
financial need. Applicants must have a good attendance record, a strong
ethic and a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
For more information contact
Donna Wear at 534-3350, or Counselor Donna Mattingly at 534-3255.
