PITFALLS AND POSSIBILITIES

Looking for "pitfalls and possibilities" is how former congressional aide David Mast described a big part of his job being the eyes and ears for U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield for 8 years.

Mast, who left the public sector for a private sector job six months ago, took a humorous walk down memory lane from when he began his "steep learning curve" as an aide in 1999 to the present, during which he mentioned a number of Rotarians he has worked with over the years on a number of issues, including the champions of Paducah's river industry, Bill Dyer and Ken Wheeler.

But the most time consuming part of his job was Paducah's gaseous diffusion plant. "The plant could have had it's own full-time congressional aide," said Mast, referring to the complexities of issues at the plant.

His most stressful assignment, however, began with a call from the White House. Mast was asked to coordinate a visit to Paducah by President George W. Bush. "It was my most stressful week. I burned through 3,500 minutes on my cell phone that week," he said. The visit involved hundreds of people on the ground and asking for help from numerous community leaders. He acknowledged Swift and Staley COO Bill Holsapple for providing posts and fences for crowd control.

Through it all, Mast said Paducah was welcoming from the beginning, and later came to embrace him as an individual who had something to offer outside of his official job title. Mast is currently a member of The Think Tank and serving on the Lourdes Foundation Board. He hopes to find more ways to give back to the community in the future.
