LABOR RELATIONS: A STORIED PAST

Bill O'Brien knows a lot about negotiation. Over the last 30+ years he has worked in labor relations in the industrial sector. Most recently he worked with the City of Paducah as a contract negotiator. He spoke to Rotarians today about the lessons that he learned during his professional career.

Mr. O'Brien colorfully illustrated how stories can often paint incorrect pictures of actual events. When managers work to negotiate with staff, they must keep a perspective about the situation that led to the need for negotiation and strive to maintain a positive relationship between management and staff.

Per Mr. O'Brien, attributes of a well working process includes three things: a.) labor contracts cannot get in the way of the output of the business, b.) managers must be able to depend on the resources and skills of those resources available, and c.) employers must pay a fair, competitive wage.

These attributes were applied to the recent negotiations that took place between the City of Paducah and its public employees who were represented by union groups. Each group was comprised of employees from different backgrounds, yet they all had one thing in common: the desire for recognition and fair pay. Negotiations are now complete, though it may take a few years to see the impact of the process. Achievement with labor negotiations requires the same basic process as achievement with any other goal - to get there, managers must set standards and work to achieve them. Success is not always instant, but with patience and a maintained perspective, it will come.

Jamie Futrell and L.V. McGinty reminded Rotarians that we are in the "soft sell" phase of recruiting volunteers for the upcoming Rotary Antique Quilt Show, but L.V., the former FBI man, threatened a "lock down" phase in a couple of weeks if the volunteer sign up sheet wasn't filled.

ROTARY JOINS LIBRARY IN NEWBORN LITERACY PROJECT

The McCracken County Public Library and the Rotary Club of Paducah are on the same page when it comes to newborn literacy by playing a key role in sharing books with babies. Thanks to a generous $5,000 gift from the Rotary Club, the library's Newborn Literacy Project continues for another year.

Here's how the project works: Every baby born at Western Baptist Hospital and Lourdes in Paducah receives a special package designed to encourage the new parents to read early and often to their child. "Read to Me" packages include an Every Child Ready to Read @ your libraryŽ brochure and a baby board book, along with library information and card applications.

This is the third year for the library-Rotary Club partnership. Each year, the Newborn Literacy Project distribution has grown along with the Paducah and McCracken County community. This year, the project plans to serve 1,800 babies and their families at both hospitals.
