Kentucky Legislative Session
First
term State Representative Brent Housman of Paducah called this year's
legislative session, "moderately successful." He said three major
issues dominated the session, including the state budget shortfall,
the tax increase on tobacco and liquor and the state's road plan,
which got a boost from the federal stimulus package for funding that
means more ra projects will get done this year.
Housman was also pleased with the passage
of the Senate Bill 1, better known as the CATS Testing bill, which
had wide-ranging support among the educational community. He was also
pleased to see the same spirit of cooperation across the aisle in
the House without a lot of partisan bickering. "People were able to
put partisan differences aside and put the community first," he said.
State Senator Bob Leeper, who represents
McCracken, Marshall and Ballard Counties, said the ice storm affected
the personality of the legislative session, along with the current
economic woes. Leeper was one of only 9 Senators out of the 38 to
get a bill passed this year. He is particularly pleased that his Brownfields
Bill designed to clean up some prime economic development sites in
Kentucky passed. He is also more hopeful for the chances of his bill,
which will lift the moratorium on nuclear energy plants in the state
during next year's session. Leeper echoed Housman's view that circumstances
"brought everyone together to make Kentucky a better state."
