THE VOICE OF THE KENTUCKY WILDCATS

Tom Leach is excited about entering his 11th season calling the play by play action for the University of Kentucky Football and Basketball Wildcats. In fact, he's quite optimistic about the football Wildcats, which have not been the traditional powerhouse in college sports as their basketball counterparts.

Leach said the football season is shaping up to the "most anticipated" in some time. Although, the schedule is a tough one, he thinks this team has something "special" that could produce one of those memorable seasons.

He's not the only one, Coach Rich Brooks, was also upbeat about the team's chances at an SEC showcase in Birmingham last week. Leach says Brooks is not known for hyperbole, so he was pleased that the coach didn't appear to be "tempering fans enthusiasm."

Leach believes U.K. may have the best offense in what he calls the "best league," the SEC. He thinks the Cats will stand up well against tough opponents like Tennessee, Florida and Louisville.

"Kentucky hasn't had a sustained success in football, but if they consistently get Bowl Games, it is the first step to begin building upon, and to claim that next rung on the ladder," said Leach.

On the basketball side, the Cats have a new coach, Billy Gillispie, who is generating a lot of interest. Leach said there is a lot of buzz and momentum about this year's season that could feature four starting guards.

"They may be a team limited in size, but not in style," commented Leach.

After fielding questions from the Club about the Cats, Leach queried members with a trivia question, which Dan Key successfully answered to win an autographed Wildcat Football program autographed by Coach Brooks.

She is a graduate of Centre College, a golfer and a marathon runner. She and her husband are building a new home here and are members of St. Thomas More.
