"Challenges Ahead for Barkley Regional Airport"

Richard Roof, the long-time director of Paducah's Barkley Regional Airport says air service out of Paducah is being impacted by macro trends in the national airline industry. Fuel costs are again on the rise, which means revenues are down and expense are up for the carriers. "Sure they can fill an airplane, but they can't make any money. It's ugly," said Roof.

This brings about more mergers in the industry, which results in fewer hubs and fewer options for Paducah area travelers. In fact, Delta recently issued a 90-day termination of service to Paducah and seven other communities through their Mesaba Subsidiary, meaning two round-trip daily flights down from the usual three at Barkley. Other communities, such Monroe, LA and Marion, IL will retain their three flights despite the fact they move fewer passengers than Paducah. That's because service to those communities is subsidized through the Federal Essential Air Service program, making those communities more attractive to some carriers than Paducah.

Roof says applying to participate in the program is a double-edged sword for Paducah. It could potentially hurt marketing activities with other carriers due to the perception that air service to Paducah has had to be subsidized. It also puts pressure on the existing carrier on the profitability of some routes.

Roof said Paducah, which has a four state half a million population target market is also unique in that more people fly in than out of Barkley Regional. The airport has filed to challenge the Delta/Mesaba filing and he expects a resolution in a month to five weeks.
