ROTARY CLUB OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY
Glenda Adkisson, Fellow Rotarian and Executive Director of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the CEO of the Tennessee Valley Red Cross, Steve Beeler, explained that someone needs a blood transfusion every two seconds in this country. This punctuates the importance of the upcoming Rotary-Lions Club Blood Drive next week on behalf of the Red Cross. Bealer said 120,000 local donors gave 153 units of blood last year that saved 465 thousand lives. The donated blood is used locally first, but if supply exceeds demand the blood maybe exported to another region of the country in need. Last year, our region fell 2,000 units short of the need. The Red Cross is seeing an increasing demand for blood due to an increase in the aging population and a decline in the number of eligible donors. Bealer said only 38% of the population is an eligible donor and only 8% of those become donors. Some international travel and other restrictions may keep a donor from participating for 12 months or more. Rotarians are urged to sign up on the hour and the half hour for next Thursday's Blood Drive between Noon and 6 pm at the Broadway United Methodist Church. to sign up Email Tracie at office@paducahrotary.org or call the office at 442-3418 NEW MEMBER
