WKMS "More News, More Music, More Interesting"

For some long-time listeners of the area's public radio station, WKMS-FM in Murray, recent programming decisions have been a bit controversial, while pleasing others. Station Manager Kate Lochte and Programming Director Mark Welch explained the reasons for the changes and what can be expected in future for WKMS.

At issue is the replacement of two hours of daily classical music programming with more news and information. As Welch said, "Change at WKMS is made at barge-like speed rather than speed boat-like speed," explaining the programming changes have been in the works since 2000, when the first of several listener surveys indicated a preference for more news and information. Arbitron ratings confirmed that in 2008 when ratings dropped off dramatically during the daytime classical music programming hours.

The popularity of wall-to-wall coverage during the catastrophic 2009 ice storm and a subsequent online survey indicated news and information was the most appropriate programming for those time slots.

Classical music lovers need not despair, however. The WKMS Digital HD-2 is now broadcasting 24 hours a day of classical music, which can be received with a digital radio receiver or accessed online. The programming will also be available soon on the WKMS Paducah frequency of 92.1. This means more classical programming than ever before, along with more Paducah Symphony Orchestra broadcast performances. In addition, Welch will host a Friday night live musical concert program at 7 pm featuring PSO and concerts held on the campus of Murray State University.
