"Get
More Active "
Dr.
Kyle Parish, Family Practice & Sports Medicine
The numbers are adding up that the
U.S. is overweight and under-exercised. Local physician Kyle
Parish used CDC statistics and data from his practice to show
exercise's role in the physical condition of the country in general
and the south in particular
Exercise can be divided into three
categories: physical activity, planned physical activity, and
physical fitness. Since 1996, the CDC has recommended a minimum
of at least 30 minutes of light to moderate physical activity on most
days of the weeks. Mowing, gardening, and even vacuuming fit into
this category.
The risks of exercise are relatively
low. Overuse injuries, sudden cardiac death, and environmental injuries
are rare.
Dr. Parish's suggestion for his
patients is a balanced dose of frequency, intensity, type, and time
of exercise. Exercising three times per week and engaging in a type
of a fitness routine that is tailored to the individual's likes are
important.
He thinks that physicians' roles in patient
fitness are sometimes neglected because doctors just don't have time
to prescribe exercise as part of a diagnosis. He also feels there
is a certain pessimism on the part of doctors because they don't know
if patients will follow their suggestions. And many doctors do not
have the training to prescribe exercise.
A look to the future reveals that the
vision for the population is to have a healthy U.S. by 2010. That
means there will need to be more education to curb trends. A major
focus will be on pediatric and adolescent population. In the meantime,
Dr. Parish urges everyone to "get more active."

Carolyn Roberts was the winner of
the flower arrangement donated by Flower Gallery of Lone Oak. Happy
Birthday to Carolyn and all the August birthdays.
On September 20th our Rotaract chapter
will be participating in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk.
Rotaract is aggressively seeking to be the highest contributor at this
year's event. To help them in this goal, the group is hosting a Guitar
Hero Tournament on September 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Rotaract
needs our help in raising the start up funds needed to offset the expenses
of this fundraising activity. Rotary businesses are urged to donate to
the cause. For more information, please contact Rotary member Erin Whitlock
