"The 53rd Annual WPSD-Lion's Club Telethon of Stars"

Few people may realize that the long-running Telethon of Stars is the largest, locally produced telethon in the nation, said Bob Crosno, WPSDLocal6 Sales Manager and Lion's Club member, who has been a part of the show for 32 years. Thanks to the generosity of the station's owners, the telethon returns up to 85% of the funds raised to the Easter Seals Center and its associated charities, as compared to only a 40% to 60% net for other telethons.

The telethon has grown and gone through several transitions in its 53-year history beginning in 1957, the first year WPSD was on the air, which raised just over $9,800. In 1958, the telethon began attracting nationally known talent as MC's and performers.

Crosno led the Club down memory lane with a list of fondly remembered telethon stars. In 1958-George DeWitt; 1959-Hugh Downs; 1965-66; Ed Ames; 1967-Leonard Nimoy; 1969-Doug McClure; 1973-Michael Landon; 1975-Artie Johnson, to name a few. Many also remember Ralph Emery, who was MC for 13 years and Dorothy Olsen, known as the "singing schoolteacher," who appeared at the telethon for 18 years.

In 1982, the telethon moved from the WPSD studio to the Executive Inn Showroom, which marked a transition from primarily TV stars to musical stars, such as T.G. Shephard, Jerry Reed and Steve Wariner. The telethon kicked up it a notch last year by moving to the Carson Center. Crosno said, "The entertainers are ecstatic with the acoustics."

Valerie Pollard, past Lion's Club President and former Development Director the Easter Seals Center said the telethon has raised an amazing $21,653.907 in it's 53 year history. Last year, the telethon brought in $597,952, and all money raised in the four state area goes back to the state where it was donated.

Pollard made the announcement that the popular acapella group, Ball in the House will return this year. Other stars will be announced in the fall.
