THE TROLLY IS WAITING

Today the club welcomed internationally known Harvey Sadow. Harvey has more than 30 years of experience as an artist and educator. His work is exhibited at the White House Collection of Contemporary Craft, the International Museum of Ceramic Craft and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He now serves as Director for Paducah School for the Arts.

Harvey spoke at length about Paducah and the attributes that many of us, as native, often take for granted. Paducah is home to many postcard-like buildings, churches and historic homes which are well taken care of. Downtown streets are "people scaled" and lead to businesses, old and new, restaurants and cultural experiences such as galleries and theaters. History is alive downtown and is reflected along the riverfront through hundreds of feet of murals.

The old Kitchens Incorporated building at the corner of 9th and Harrison Streets is the new home of the Paducah School for the Arts. Residents may ask, "Why a new art school? What impact does that have to us, Paducah's citizens?" Harvey can tell you the reasons why.

Studies have shown that there is a measurable impact that cultural districts have upon the cities that they are a part of. They beautify communities, attract residents, boost tourism, expand tax bases and improve property values. Art education also has a profound impact upon students. Art education increases academic rigor, strengthens a student's problem solving skills, boosts attention span, and builds a foundation for school and work success through the development of goal setting skills and a positive work ethic.

Technology, Talent, and Tolerance are keys to community growth. Cultural district success is built upon Density, Diversity and Destination. The Paducah School for the Arts will contribute to all of these keys leading to the development of a successful cultural district positioned within a successful community.

This school and its goals are dependent upon the involvement of all of us within our community. Help is not only needed, it's welcomed. As they say in Lowertown, the trolley is waiting - hop on!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sixteen Rotarians are celebrating birthdays in December. Keith Wilke was the winner of the weekly birthday floral arrangement from The Flower Galley.

The Rotary Board of Directors will meet Wednesday, December 19th at 5:15 pm at Whaler's Catch.

FEATURED ROTARIAN CHARLES MOFFITT

Today's featured Rotarian is Charles Moffitt. Charles is a Paducah native. He joined Rotary in 1966. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and has served in several capacities throughout his Rotary years. Most notably, he was club treasurer for 12 years.

Charles obtained his degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky and has been a practicing accountant for 41 years. Many of us know him through his practice, Moffitt & Company PLLC. His motto there: "if you take care of your shop, your shop will take care of you."

Charles is a family man. He and his wife, Sue, have one daughter and one grandson. He was once described by a colleague as "the most boring person she has ever known." In the words of David Compberry, if a love of family, friends, business excellence and a desire to serve God and community makes a person boring, we should all seek to be such."
