"MSU - Regional Stewardship and Outreach Program"

Gina Winchester, executive director of the new Regional Stewardship and Outreach Program at Murray State University (MSU)explained that Kentucky is the first state in the nation to launch a statewide stewardship program.

This is a state legislative initiative promoting regional and statewide economic development, livable communities, social inclusion, creative governance, and civic participation. The purpose is to link the resources and knowledge of the public regional universities with the needs of the respective regions. MSU’s region includes the 18 western-most counties.

Inspired by the effectiveness of Northern Kentucky University in regional economic development, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education extended Regional Stewardship to all 6 regional state universities. Dr. Randy Dunn, MSU President, appointed a diverse group of representatives from each of the 18 counties to MSU’s Regional Stewardship Advisory Council. Rotarians David Denton and Debbie Wattier represent McCracken County.

The MSU Advisory Council created a vision statement: “A united Western Kentucky changing its culture to succeed in the new century.” The Advisory Council then identified four strategic goals: educational attainment, job creation/entrepreneurial spirit, collaborative partnerships, and quality of life, and focused current state funding on 9 projects under educational attainment. Mrs. Winchester provided each Rotarian a copy of the MSU Regional Stewardship Council’s vision plan, goals, and current projects. Additional information may be found at www.murraystate.edu/stewardship.
