WKMS- BRINGING DIVERSITY TO THE AIRWAVES

Today the club welcomed Kate Lochte, Station Manager for WKMS-FM from Murray State University.

Kate last spoke to the Rotary Club 17 years ago. Since then, the station has developed into a 24-7 broadcast service, and has accomplished extensive redundancy of its transmission systems, including the installation of a new 20K analog transmitter alongside the old transmitter and a dummy load allowing the station to work on its transmitter in the event of transmission line damage. Over the years WKMS has also added a full service internet stream of its air signal at www.wkms.org, a digital automation system, all digital editing workstations, translators in Paducah, Paris, and Madisonville, and most recently, a digital transmission system.

WKMS employs nine full time employees, four part time employees and a large number of students and volunteers at its home at Murray State University. The station gets half its budget from MSU. The remaining budget must come from community support. The station's major expense is programming much of which is paid for by listener support dollars.

The mission of WKMS is audience development. WKMS exposes its listeners to a wide base of programming which includes worldwide news, music and entertainment that so well complement performances that listeners can see locally at venues such as the Market House Theater, the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center and through performances given by the Paducah Symphony Orchestra.

Its alignment with MSU is a well designed match. WKMS' audience base is comprised of college graduates. As such, WKMS is a supporter of the 2020 achievement which aims at increasing the number of college graduates in the state of Kentucky. The station shares in MSU's mission which fosters excellence, and seeks to create partnerships by reaching out to communities, the nation, and the world.
