"The
Arts and Economic Prosperity "
A
new study conducted by the Americans for the Arts provides compelling
evidence that the arts are big business for the greater Paducah area.
Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research, announced to Rotarians the
non-profit arts and cultural activities are a $39.9 million industry
in the area encompassing McCracken, Graves, Marshall and Calloway
Counties, providing 819 full-time jobs and generating $3.6 million
in local and state government revenue.
Cohen's survey found that
the arts organizations themselves spend $10.9 million a year and leverage
a remarkable $27.8 million in additional spending by the audiences
they serve. This spending is way above the national average and pumps
vital revenue into local restaurants, hotels, retail stores and other
businesses. Paducah's individual artists account for another $1.1
million in annual spending.
On average, attendees
to arts and cultural events spend more than $70 per person, per event.
Cohen says this will serve the area well in a down economy as Paducah
is in a "drive market" well within a 4 hour drive of a large part
of the population, which will benefit as consumers tighten their belts
by taking more economical vacations.
The study lays to rest
the common misconception that communities support the arts and culture
at the expense of traditional local economic developments. In fact,
communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their
quality of life, they also invest in their economic well-being.
