"An Unparalleled Experience"

17 year old Sarah Hendley, who is the daughter of Rotarian Missy Eckenberg and an Paul Harris Fellow herself, shared with the Club her experiences from her stint as a U.S. Senate Page last fall, which she called "an unparalleled experience." One that may have injected "politics into her blood" for a lifetime.

Wearing her navy blue page uniform, Sarah spoke of arising at 5 am to attend school and working late night hours in the Senate Chamber delivering bills and other materials, taking messages, and preparing the chamber itself for the work of the day. She and the other pages could be seen on daily on C-Span2 daily, which her mother called her "nanny cam" for the five months Sarah was away from home.

Among the historic events she witnessed were two joint sessions of Congress and the heated debate on the health care reform bill. She was also honored to have met Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Harry Reid and Sec. of State Hillary Clinton. She experienced a sentimental moment with the longest serving U.S. Senator, Robert Byrd, and enjoyed homemade Christmas cookies made by Sen. Al Franken and his wife., among many other memorable experiences.

Sarah says she may major in Political Science in college and could "end up back in Washington, D.C. again someday."

95th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Paducah

The Paducah Rotary Club celebrated its 95th birthday today with a song, some cake and a group photo commemorating the milestone, which dovetails nicely with Rotary International's 105th birthday yesterday. President L.V. went over a few highlights from the past century including the fact that the Paducah Club sponsored several other successful clubs in Metropolis, Cairo, Murray, Benton and Cadiz. The Club has met in six different locations over the years including two separate tenures at the Irvin Cobb Hotel and one surprising one at the old Cabana Club. Paducah Rotary has sponsored student Rotarians since 1945, given local charitable donations since 1932 and has made $650,000 in student scholarships since its inception. It is number 139 out of the 32,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide. Happy Birthday Rotarians! Rotary International also celebrates this month 105th Anniversary.
