President Abraham Lincoln portrayed by Jim Sayre, A Kentucky Chautauqua presentation

Mr. Sayre portrayed Abraham Lincoln, giving a first-person presentation about Lincoln's life. He brought to life President Lincoln's strong character through familial and childhood anecdotes.

Lincoln was born in Kentucky and raised on a couple of farms in Central Kentucky until he was seven years old when his family (mom, dad, and sister Sara) relocated to southern Indiana. He was an avid reader. "I read every book in the house, that is the only book in the house-the Bible."

Lincoln's mother died when he was nine. His father remarried a widow named Sara and Lincoln gained three step siblings.

After a stint as an unsuccessful businessman, Lincoln became a lawyer in Illinois. . . and his career led him to work in politics. He gained national renown for his stance opposing slavery during the seven famous "Douglas Debates with Stephen A. Douglas.

Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States in the fall of 1860, taking office in the winter of 1861. In April 1961, eleven states attempted to secede from the Union. . . and thus began the Civil War.

It was about mid-way through the war, in November 19, 1863, that Lincoln gave us the famous words of The Gettysburg Address.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate-we can not consecrate-we can not hallow-this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government : of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Jim Sayre was born in Anderson County and educated in the local schools. He lives in Lawrenceburg. Sayre retired as transportation manager of Lawrenceburg Transfer. After growing a beard upon his release from the Army in 1959, Sayre entered a Lincoln-look-alike contest. This ignited his interest in Lincoln and he has since portrayed the great president in many states.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Jayme Brockman will be representing the Rotary Club of Paducah in the Rotary Global Studies Exchange Trip to Norway. She leaves on Sunday. While there, she will represent the club at Rotary club meetings and District Conference, giving presentations about Kentucky at various locations. She will be staying with four host families and learning about Norway. Jayme will speak to the Club upon her return. One of her team members will be keeping a blog at http://norwaygse2009.blogspot.com/

The Rotary Office is in need of additional storage space for items displaced by the United Way move. Rotary Leadership is also seeking new office space. If you know of space that might be available, please contact John Halsell.
