"Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games"
For
sixteen days beginning September 25th and ending October 10th, Lexington
will play host to the 2010 World Equestrian Games. This event is
held every four years and is the largest equine event in the world.
This year is the first year that the event has been held outside
of Europe. Prior host cities include Stockholm, Sweden; The Hauge,
Netherlands; Rome, Italy; Jerez, Spain; and Aachen, Germany. Alltech
is this year's title sponsor. This year marks the first year that
the World Equestrian Games has had a title sponsor. Additional sponsors
include Rolex, Rood & Riddle, Ariat, John Deere, Kentucky Ale, Dippin'
Dots and Bluegrass Airport.
The event consists of world championships
for eight equestrian sports including: dressage, endurance, eventing,
reining, jumping, vaulting, driving, and para-equestiran. Over 600
competitors from 60 countries will compete. The event is expected
to draw 600,000 spectators and be broadcast to more than 460 million
worldwide television viewers. NBC will host live weekend coverage
as will a number of major cable providers.
This event is estimated to have
an estimated economic impact of $150 million within the state of
Kentucky. The average attendee will stay 9 nights in the state
of Kentucky. The economic impact is projected to reach the entire
state of Kentucky, not just Lexington where the event is to be held.
The Alltech Fortnight Festival incorporates the equine industry
with Kentucky arts and music with statewide concerts taking place
every night of the event. In the last two years, Paducah and Murray
have both played host to a Fortnight Concert Series bringing visitors
to our region.
Tickets range in price from $25 to
$150. Those interesting in attending can obtain additional information
about the games by visiting the official website at www.alltechfeigames.com
or by calling (859) 255-2010 ext. 231. Over 11,000 volunteers have
registered to assist with this year's games. Additional volunteers
are still needed. Visit the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games website
to apply to be a 2010 volunteer.
