THE HUGE AND GROWING PROBLEM

Despite what many think, smoking is not the most common cause of heart disease. Obesity is actually the bigger threat to our health, and it is a "huge and growing" problem. Which is why Dr. Pat Withrow, the Director of Western Baptist Hospital's Heart Center and the American Heart Association, are joining forces to encourage the local business community to "Start" something new in the workplace that could help stem the tide against weight gain and its many resulting health problems.

Dr. Withrow says increased caloric intake and a decrease in physical activity has translated to a national epidemic of obesity. Since 1950, there has been an 83% increase in the number of sedentary jobs, as well as an increase in the time we spend doing it. Employees now work an additional 164 hours per year than they did 20 years ago. Pressed for time, families turned to fast food and have slacked off on exercise leading to ever expanding waistlines for adults and children.

Although obesity is a national problem, it is a steadily increasing problem in Kentucky and the southeast, in particular, which Dr. Withrow calls "the stroke and heart attack belt." Twenty years ago, 10% to 14% of Kentuckians were obese, which was a high number among the states. Today, that number has increased across the board nationally, but has ballooned to 30% in Kentucky.

Obesity causes a number of deadly and expensive diseases, including High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes, Stroke, Heart Disease, Arthritis, Respiratory problems, and numerous Cancers. The calculated cost to business due to these illnesses is nearly $13 billion a year, and results in a $226 billion loss in productivity annually.

"The solution is quite simple," said Dr. Withrow. Start eating less and walking more. Hence, the name of a new program, "Start!" to get people up and moving at the place where they spend the most time: work.

WBH and the American Heart Association are asking local businesses to request a "Start!" kit to help employees start walking at least 30 minutes a day. So far, 400 WBH employees have signed up for the program.

The free kit is filled with tools to help businesses initiate a workplace walking program, including online resources. For more information, or to request a kit, call 575-2777, or visit americanheart.org.

CHARITY DONATION

Scott Taylor, a member of the Market House Theater Board of Directors, accepted a donation from the Club on behalf of the organization. Taylor said MHT has touched the lives of 30,000 area school children through its outreach programs. He said 97 cents of every dollar spent on tickets to the theater's main stage productions stay in the community.

FEATURED ROTARIAN DAVE PERRY

David Comperry introduced this week's Featured Rotarian, who is David Perry, a member of Rotary since he moved to Paducah in 1992. Although not a native of Paducah, he was fortunate enough to meet and marry the daughter of one the city's oldest families, Carolyn Katterjohn, while both attended graduate school in Phoenix. David has lived throughout the west and midwest, but has deep roots in Nebraska, where his great, great grandmother was an 1867 homesteader and political activist. He's also a graduate of the University of Nebraska. In 1992, while David and Carolyn were living in Dallas, where he worked for Ross Perot's EDS corporation, the opportunity arose for the couple to purchase her father's business, Owen Cleaners, and move to Paducah. Owen Cleaners is celebrating it's 88th year of operation this month. David has been active in the community and has served on the boards of Paducah Bank and CSI, and he has been the finance chair of the Broadway United Methodist Church. His hobby is ham radio. He and Carolyn have two children, Emily and Matthew.
