U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell

The longest serving U.S. Senator in Kentucky's history had some words of praise, but even more words of criticism of President Barack Obama's administration.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, who recently returned from a visit to Afghanistan and Pakistan, supports the surge in troops into Afghanistan. He said he has complete confidence in the team the administration has put in place, yet says there is confusion about how to handle terror suspects.

His main criticism was of the Obama administration's push for health care reform legislation. McConnell remains against passing such sweeping reform, which still faces a tough battle in the Senate after passing House. McConnell is more supportive of finding ways to pass targeted, incremental reform, such as putting a stop to defensive medicine and allowing health insurers to operate over state lines increasing competition.

Closer to home, Sen. McConnell said funding efforts remained weak to complete the renovation of the Kentucky Lock and Dam, but more optimistic for the Olmstead Lock and Dam.

Senator McConnell signed copies of his new book, "Republican Leader" before and after his visit with Rotarians.
