UPDATE ON THE NASHVILLE PREDATORS

In 1997, when the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League first took to the ice some sports fans must have been scratching heads. Could a sport more commonly associated with northern and midwestern states make it in the mid-south? Then answer is a resounding, "yes!"

Randy Campbell, the Vice President of Marketing for the Predators said attendance is averaging 13,500 as the team enters it's 10th season. The Predators also have new owners, which hope to boost the popularity of the team and for the sport in the coming years.

Former owner Craig Leopold, a Wisconisn resident, felt a more day to day presence of an owner would be essential for the success of the franchise. As a result, he turned down a reported offer of $228 million from the Canadian inventor of the Blackberry, in favor of a group of Nashville-based investors for a substantially smaller fee of $198 million.

The local investors are dedicated to making sure hockey has a permanent presence and are also making efforts to build ice rinks in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky to encourage youth hockey leagues. The sport has increased in popularity in the area. In fact, Murray State University has a new ice rink, which is home to youth hockey teams from the area.

The Predators play 41 home games each season in downtown Nashville on both weekends and weeknights. Tickets are $19, but packages and discounts are also available.

Campbell also gave away two door prizes. Jay Downs Siska was the winner of two tickets to the February 2nd home game, and Joe Kauffman took home an autographed hockey stick.

FEATURED ROTARIAN BEVERLY REED

Chris McNeill introduced this week's Featured Rotarian, Beverly Reed, who comes to us from the Murray Rotary Club. She is a western Kentucky native, who lives in Brewers. Beverly is an agent at Western Rivers Insurance (formerly Woodall Insurance) which will be celebrating 100 years in business. Beverly is celebrating her 23rd year in the insurance business. She attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and finished up her degree at Murray State. She and her husband, Harry, are both dedicated sailors. In fact, they own 11 sailboats, along with 17 horses. Beverly's "fun fact" involves her favorite hobby. She and her husband had to be rescued during a race when their sailboat sank. Despite having to be treated for hypothermia, the pair placed 3rd in a race just ten days later using the same boat!
