The Face of Paducah's River Industry to get a Face Lift

Last week, Rotarians heard how Paducah, with it's 3,000 workers in the area's river industry, is rightly described as the hub of the nation's inland waterways. Today, the Club learned of the expansion plans for the public face of the industry, the River Heritage Museum.

Rotarian Glen Anderson, President of Paducah Water and Chairman of the River Heritage Museum Board of Directors, walked Rotarians through a digital tour of the $24 million expansion, which will include a striking, contemporary glass structure next door to the existing historic structure, along with a cantilevered riverside structure extending over the floodwall. The design will dovetail nicely with the City of Paducah's downtown riverfront development plans.

The museum, which opened in 2003, attracts 10,000 visitors each year to it's location on Water Street. Anderson said the new expansion and exhibits will potentially attract more than 100,000 visitors. Those visitors will be treated to state of the art exhibits featuring life on and in the river, including a 20,000 gallon aquarium, a towboat navigation simulator, and a rooftop "river" where kids of all ages can pilot remote control towboats.

The museum board hopes to raise $24 million in state and government funds for construction and another $10 million in private funds to create an endowment to support the ongoing operation of the museum.

Other Rotarians will be heavily involved in the fund raising effort. Ken Wheeler is the Honorary Chairman of the campaign, while Bruce Brockenborough will serve with Ronnie James of James Marine, as Co-Chairs.

FEATURED ROTARIAN WALLY MONTGOMERY

Rotarians and the community at large are familiar with Dr. Montgomery's medical career and history of public service, but perhaps few know that he grew up on a farm in the heart of Kentucky horse country in Midway. In fact, his father used to exercise the legendary thoroughbred racehorse, Man O' War. Dr. Montgomery's hard work walking behind a mule plowing the fields for his family and others inspired him to go to medical school at U. of L. A neighbor was so impressed with his work ethic that she actually paid for the his first two years of medical school. While in college he met his future wife, Gerry Montgomery, who would one day become Mayor of Paducah and a City Commissioner. The couple have three children, two of which are also physicians, and several grandchildren. Dr. Montgomery was in the military and served overseas with the medical brigade during Operation Desert Storm. His public service also included a stint as President of the Kentucky Medical Association and other health-related organizations. He is on the PJC Board and Paducah Bank Board of Directors. He's also a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Immanuel Baptist Church.
