"Taking Better Photos"

There are a number of fairly simple techniques used by the pros to aid even amateur photographers in taking more beautiful photos. Alison Hahn, a photography instructor at the Paducah School for the Arts, says experimenting with these tips will enhance any photo.

Rule of Thirds: A composition technique by which the photographer divides the picture frame into thirds vertically and horizontally that produces four quadrants, or a "sweet spot" for photographing a subject. This adds more dynamism and energy to the photo compared to merely centering the subject.

Point of View: Experiment with taking photographs from interesting angles or locations, such as from the ground or from above.

Edges of the Frame: Be mindful of the outer edges of the scene and experiment with finding objects that can create a frame within a frame for your photo.

White Balance: The camera has a set of filters that adds or subtracts colors generated by different light sources. Midday sunlight is the most neutral time of day to shoot.

There are also camera settings that can be fun to experiment with, including using the softer flash, choosing landscape or sunset mode that emphasizes certain colors, and night portrait mode, which captures movement. Hahn said some manual techniques to add energy and more effect to photos include "dragging the shutter," which slows the shutter speed, using a "zoom motion," which takes the photo while the shutter is open. Another fun technique is to actually move the camera while taking the shot, which is called "camera shake."

Hahn is teaching two courses this semester, one for beginners and one for more advanced photographers, at the Paducah School for the Arts beginning January 11th.
