" HOOPFEST "

For the uninitiated, one of the biggest annual events for high school basketball in the nation is held in Marshall County each year attracting 6,000 spectators a night and the cream of the crop of nationally-ranked teams. Former coach Steve Woodward has made Marshall County and Massac County, just across the river, into two meccas for high school basketball, and is now shooting for a third.

Woodward, who began the Superman Classic in Massac County 28 years ago, repeated that success with the Marshall County Hoopfest several years ago, which USA Today called one of the best boys tournaments to watch in the nation.

It's turned into a big business, bringing not only national recognition to the region, but big bucks, too. Woodward said the event has a $3 million economic impact, which flows into Marshall County and Paducah during the tournament, and it continues to grow about 25% each year.

Woodward recruits some of the best nationally ranked teams to the tournament, such as Oak Hill Academy, which has 25 former players in the NBA. His stellar line up in turn attracts the top college coaches and scouts from around the nation, as well as corporate sponsors. One of the Hoop Fest games was televised last year on ESPN.

The former coach, who has several colorful stories involving players and college coaches, has now expanded the idea to Laurel County, Kentucky. Woodward now runs the tournaments for Wazoosports, an online sports channel. http://www.hoopfest.wazoosports.com
