YOUR INVITATION TO EVERYTHING PADUCAH!

If you want to know what's going on in Paducah you need to look no further than your friendly Internet browser. Mary Thorsby offers your own personal invitation to all the community events, parties and personalities around Paducah on iListPaducah.com.

Thorsby got the idea for creating the website when she discovered there was no single resource for community event dates while trying to find a non-conflicting date for a local fund raiser.

The website also contains some fun features, including the "date of the week," which features a local single each week. Rotarian Art Feather is this week's featured single, by the way. Thorsby also writes a weekly blog about events or people in Paducah.

In addition, Thorsby's husband, Rotarian Bruce Brockenborough, pitches in by offering up reviews of music and food under the respective pseudonyms of D.J. Urban Cobb and Alben Parsley.

The site is gaining in traffic and sponsorship. Since June 2007 iListPaducah.com has garnered 13,200 unique visitors and 92,189 page views. Corporate sponsorships of the site can be purchased for a $50 monthly fee.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sixteen Rotarians are celebrating birthdays in January. The winner of this week's birthday floral arrangement from the Flower Gallery in Lone Oak was Glenda Adkisson.

Jamie Futrell, Rotary Attendance Czar, was encouraged by attendance in December, which was rounded up statistically to a nice, round 60%. Jackie Jones was the winner of this month's Attendance Prize: Two tickets to the January 29th Focus Series performance.

Kristin Williams asked for 3 or 4 volunteers to help judge the Rotary Club Speech Contest on January 22nd at 4 pm at the Paducah Library. The speeches are only 8 minutes in length and the event requires about a one hour commitment.

Six judges are also needed for the 4-H Speech Contest at St. Mary Elementary on January 22nd.

Anyone interested in becoming part of the new Rotoract program should attend a meeting on Tuesday, January 29th at 5:30 pm.

The Rotary Board of Directors will meet January 16th at 5:15 at Whaler's Catch.

TWO NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED

President George was pleased to kick off the first Rotary meeting of 2008 with the induction of two new members.

Darlene Dreyer, sponsored by Debbie Stone, is the new Executive Director of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra. Darlene moved here last year from the Jersey Shore and the directorship of the Garden State Philharmonic. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Symphony League. Darlene has degrees in both Music and Engineering Physics, in addition to a masters in Music. She has been very active in the community since moving to Paducah. She is a member of the 20's-30's Group and St. Frances De Sales. Darlene plays the flute and enjoys ballroom dancing.

Harvey Sardow, sponsored by Jim Zumwalt, is another representative of the arts. Harvey is the Director of Paducah School for the Arts, and is a professional potter, specializing in ceramics. He comes to Paducah from Jupiter, Florida. He and his wife, an artist and software designer, have one daughter.

Welcome to the Club, Darlene and Harvey!

FEATURED ROTARIAN BRUCE BROCKENBOROUGH

Chris McNeill profiled today's Featured Rotarian, Bruce Brockenborough, who is President of Hannan Supply, a wholesale electrical supply company, owned by his father, Rotarian Jim Brockenborough. Hannan Supply is the largest independently owned business of its kind in Kentucky with branches in Owensboro and Hopkinsville. He attended the University of Missouri and earned an MBA from Vanderbilt. Bruce is very active in the community and serves as the Chair of Paducah Main Street and the WKCTC Board of Directors. He is also a member of numerous boards and organizations. He has two children 15 and 10 years old.

JANUARY IS ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH

As Rotary grows, Rotarians must make an extra effort to keep up with new programs, policies, and even new Rotary countries. In January, Rotary Awareness Month, let's all set aside time to catch up on Rotary news and brush up on Rotary knowledge. The purpose of this special month is to gain a better understanding of what Rotary is all about for our own growth as Rotarians, and so that we can increase the public's awareness of Rotary's work in our community and around the world. Remember: The best Rotarian is the one who knows Rotary best!
