A LOOK AT DISTRICT 6710

Our own Dan Key, who is Assistant District Governor this year, introduced our current District Governor, Dave Weller, to the Club, who talked about this year's Rotary International theme, and how it impacts District 6710.

Weller said the Rotary International theme for the year, "Rotary Shares," really speaks to what Rotary is all about. Sharing our time, resources, expertise and knowledge to make a positive impact on our communities.

The District is involved with programs for literacy, water, health and hunger, along with things involving the "Family of Rotary."

There are currently 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide involved in 32,770 clubs in 530 districts worldwide. The latest country to join the Rotary family is Laos.

Unfortunately, Weller pointed out there is an overall decline in membership, especially in the U.S. and in Canada. The U.S. numbers have dropped in recent years from 435,000 members down to 412,000. Rotary International last saw a spike in membership in 2002, in what was viewed as a reaction to 9-11.

While growing membership continues to be a focus, the district also continues to focus on the following programs:
Ambassadorial Scholars: at least three students per year treated to a year's paid education abroad.
Group Study Exchange: at least one a year, with two scheduled for next year with Japan and the Dominican Republic.
Humanitarian Projects: such as water projects around the world. In fact, the Paducah Club has been working with the Murray Club on a dam project in Jordan.

The District has also been involved in helping to fund a new community center in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina; and with helping to wipe out Polio worldwide. Weller said Rotary International's Polio Plus program has nearly eradicated Polio. There have only been 285 cases reported so far this year, down from 1,535 cases last year. Only four endemic countries remain.

Weller praised the Paducah Club for it's leadership, but challenged Rotarians to build our membership with a goal of "net one," and to initiate a Rotoract program, along with helping achieve the ambitious goal of raising a record $300,000 for the Rotary International Foundation. Weller pointed out that the highest amount ever raised by the District was $275,000, but with a contribution of only $85 per member, the $300,000 goal can be met.

FEATURED ROTARIAN DAVID JERNIGAN

Phil McIntosh introduced David Jernigan as this week's Featured Rotarian. David is renowned for his beautiful singing voice, and with good reason. He was a music major, but opted instead to get a "real job," as he put it. He is currently the V.P. of Sales and Programming for WPSD-TV. He moved to Paducah ten years ago, and joined Rotary just a few short months after his arrival. He has been married to his wife, Sandra for a year and a half. David also has three grown children, who all live in Panama City, FL. David's vocal talent is put to good use in his job as the Club's Song Chairman. A couple of interesting factoids about David: He once sang the national anthem at a K.C. Chiefs-Raiders game in front of 50,000 fans, and also sang for Mrs. Ernest Hemingway. He loves sailing, and recently came in 2nd in his first offshore race.
