"Rotary Education Day"

The Rotary Club of Paducah has a long history of providing scholarships and loans to McCracken County students. Ed Hely, Chairman of the REAP Board, said any student in Paducah and McCracken County can apply for a maximum loan of $2,000 a year, as long as they meet the requirement of carrying a 12 hour class load each semester and have a 2.0 GPA.

The 7% interest on the loan is not applied until 3 months after graduation. However, if the student has a 3.4 GPA the loan amount is reduced by 20% and if the student becomes employed in McCracken County, an additional 20% is forgiven.

Hely also noted that Rotary International offers a Rotary World Peace Scholarship. Only 110 are awarded worldwide annually. The applicant must be enrolled in a masters degree program relating to world peace, conflict resolution, public administration or a related course of study. The student may choose to study at home or abroad. November 2009 is the deadline for applications.

Debbie Wattier encouraged Rotarians to nominate a worthwhile candidate for the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar program, which provides a $25,000 grant for study abroad. Wattier said, "It's a rare and competitive honor." The student must have demonstrated academic success and exceptional community service. The deadline for submission is April 2010 for the 2011-12 school year. Rotarians who know of such a candidate with McCracken County ties, should contact Debbie or President L.V. for more information.

The Club awarded a total of eight scholarships today under the old REAP guidelines for the upcoming school year. The recipients are:Nathan Burrow, Heath HS; Julia Janecek, Riedland HS; Ellie Hammons, Lone Oak HS; Laura Evers, Community Christian Academy; Jared Anderson, St Mary's;Naysan Khadem, Paducah Tilghman HS; Aaron Dietrich, UK School of Engineering; Kristen Wisler, WKCTC; Jared, Nayson and Aaron were not able to attend. Mrs. Dietrich accepted on behalf of Aaron.
