Robot
Assisted Emergency Stroke Care
Dr. Patrick Withrow and Western Baptist
are making dreams real in their own way by making new technology available
to area stroke victims, in conjunction with the University of Louisville's
"Stroke Robot." The telemedicine tool can save lives and brain
function by providing 24/7 stroke neurologists and experts to hospitals
far away from the U of L Medical Community via a robot. The doctors
in Louisville can immediately see and assess the patient via the robotic
screen, as well as CT scans and MRI's.
"Timing is of the essence and this tool
allows us to treat more patients in a timely fashion," said Dr. Withrow,
the Chief Medical Officer at Western Baptist.
Stroke is the third-leading cause of
death in the nation. For every minute treatment is delayed, 12 million
brain cells can die from a lack of oxygen.
Dr. Withrow emphasized keeping F.A.S.T.
in mind if you suspect a family member or friend is experiencing a
stroke.
F= FACE Try to smile. Does one side
of the face droop?
A= ARM Raise both arms. Does one arm
drift downward?
S = SPEECH Repeat a simple phrase.
Is speech slurred or odd?
T = TIME If you see any of these signs,
911 immediately.
To help reduce or reverse the effects
of most strokes, clot-busting drugs must be given within three hours
of the first symptoms.
Western Baptist also has a 24 hour Chest
Pain and Stroke Hotline at 1-800-575-1911.
Making
Dreams Real!
Serena Wurth, the winner of Rotary's Statewide Speech Contest
treated the Club to her award-winning speech on the subject of Making
Dreams Real. Serena, a 2009 graduate of Graves County High School,
gave an inspirational message about how Rotary and individuals can
make a dream come true in many ways that can also make a profound
impact to a single person. Serena has won more than $2,000 in the
Rotary Speech Contests and plans to attend the University of Louisville
in the fall. Congratulations Serena!
