Julia Roberts Costa Rican Exchange

Clark Elementary teacher, Karen Armstrong and Paducah Tilghman student, Mary Catherine Dorr spoke about the wonderful exchange program between a Costa Rican school and the Paducah City Schools. Named in honor of the late Julia Roberts, who initiated the program, but tragically died of cancer before she could participate in the first exchange in 1996. The program has subsequently held four exchanges.

The last exchange occurred this year, after a 6 year hiatus, when a group of 20 Costa Rican students visited Paducah in January, followed by a contingent of twenty-one Paducahans who traveled to Costa Rica.

Mary Catherine Dorr said the trip was full of "life changing experiences" and described Costa Rica as a "laid back" paradise. She and her fellow students are all either in the Spanish Club or take Spanish at Tilghman.

The Costa Rican students enjoyed attending some classes here in Paducah and visiting Wal-Mart.

The next exchange is being planned for 2010 and they hope to continue it every two years. The exchange is sponsored, in part by the Paducah Rotary Club.
