Rolling
on the Virtual River
Paducah's river industry is celebrating
the christening of Seamen's Church new high-tech computer simulators,
which are the most realistic representation of piloting a towboat
down a river to date at the maritime training center. Other improvements
have also been made such as an installation of beautiful art photography
of life on the river.
Father David Ridder of Seaman's Church
Institute of New York and New Jersey oversees the largest maritime
ministry in the nation for the Episcopal Church and was in Paducah
to visit with Rotarians and the community with an open house at the
Paducah training center. "It's the most advanced technology on the
planet," said Father Ridder.
Seamen's Church is celebrating its 175th
anniversary this year, which has been providing maritime training
since 1890. They expanded into inland waterway training with the opening
of the Paducah Center in the 1990's.
Rear Admiral Mary Landry of the U.S.
Coast Guard also announced that the Coast Guard would be opening a
Center for Expertise, which will train coast guard members more about
becoming regulators and facilitators of the inland waterways industry.
Craig Phillip, President and CEO of Ingram
Barge, was clearly pleased with the new developments. "Paducah has
taken another huge step in firmly being the capital of the inland
towing business," he said.
