Presidents Day 2008

June 25th marked the end of a stellar Rotary year and brings the promise of another new and exciting year of service to the community through the Paducah Rotary Club. President George Shaw had the opportunity to highlight the significant achievements made over the past year, and to honor and recognize those Rotarians who helped to make them successes.The Paducah Rotary Club of Paducah stands at 208 members, one of the largest and most active in Kentucky. The Club surpassed its goal of achieving a net gain of 2 new members this year with a net gain of 11 members.

Sixty Rotarians had perfect attendance, which helped the Club attain an average attendance record for the year of 57%, eclipsing the 50% requirement set by Rotary International. Rotarians who had 10 years or more of perfect attendance were recognized.

Rotarians with 30 years or more of service to the Club were also recognized, including the longest serving member, Gene Katterjohn, with 57 years as a Rotarian.

President George was also pleased to recognize the 12 monthly Program Chairs for the year, who bring such great speakers to the Club each week.

Two Rotarians received the coveted Paul Harris Fellowship award: Phil McIntosh and Scott Taylor. Eighty-one current Rotarians are Paul Harris Fellows, bringing the total number to 161 over the Club's history since 1915

President George said the Paducah Rotary Club continued its strong history charitable giving and community service projects.

  • $16,000 given to the Rotary International Fund, with 119 sustaining members, who donate $100 or more each year to the fund.
  • $23,150 given to various non-profit organizations.
  • More than $33,000 raised at the 20th Annual Rotary Antique Quilt Show for REAP.
  • $5,000 raised during the annual Salvation Army Kettle Drive, which the Club once again, earned the Civic Club trophy for raising the most money under the leadership of Bill Dyer.
  • $50,000 contributed to the Emerging Technology Building at West Kentucky Community College in honor of Rotary and Bill and Meredith Schroeder.
  • $77,997.79 total in charitable funds.

Other achievements during President George's year include:

  • Providing free dictionaries to every 3rd grader in Paducah and McCracken County. o
  • Providing more than 1,500 "Read a Book" bags to the parents of every newborn at Lourdes and Western Baptist Hospitals to promote early reading to children.
  • Celebrating the 20th year of the Antique Quilt Show chaired by L.V. McGinty. The $34,000 raised for REAP provided loans to 8 students this year. A total of $850,000 in REAP loans have benefited 20 years worth of area students.

President George awarded the Distinguished Service Award to long-time Rotarian, Dwayne Tucker, who has served on the REAP Board for 20 years and 8 years as Chair.

The Club also successfully established a Rotaract program this year with more than 16 members. Rotaract is a program sponsored by Rotary for those ages 18 to 30. President Crystal Jeter presented a framed photo of last week's Charter Induction Ceremony to President George and Rotoract Committee Chair Erin Whitlock, who was also honored with a Certificate of Achievement for her organizational efforts. Thirteen of Rotoract's members were guests of the Club and recognized. Lauren Wallace, Jayme Brockman, Clay Wallace, Laqueta Perry, Emily Cahen, Crystal Jeter, Chris Jeter, Chuck Sexton, Jessica Zaugg, Emily Scott, Carrie Moore, John Pace, and April Wolfrom.

President George also noted that the Club was one of only 17 Clubs in District 6710, which received Rotary's Presidential Citation this year. He recognized the Club's Board of Directors, Officers and volunteers for helping to make the year such a success.

Yet another transitional milestone was occured today, as well. After 6 years as the Club's Executive Secretary, Phyllis Russell retired to spend more time with her new grandson, Charlie. President George praised Phyllis for making the Rotary office more professional and efficient. In recognition, President George and Bill Dyer inducted Phyllis as the Club's newest Rotarian. Bill, who was Club President when Phyllis took on the job said, "The Club was much bigger, better, stronger and more esteemed since 'he' hired Phyllis in 2002." Phyllis was also honored for all her hard work and years of dedication to the Rotary organization, with the Rotarian of the Year Award.

The 2007-08 Officers and Directors were awarded plaques for their service. With that, President George passed the gavel and the antique President's pin to new President John Halsell. Former President George then received the Past President's pin and a plaque commemorating his outstanding year of service.

President John will outline his goals for the new Rotary year at next week's meeting.

Rotary Club lunches have increased to $8 per week effective July 1. This is the first increase in 6 years. This increase will be reflected on your upcoming invoices.

Murray Rotary Club 2008 Max Hurt Memorial Golf tournament will be Thursday July 3 the Two Person Scramble will be a Shotgun start @ 1pm. Registration forms are available at our office.
