President's Day at the Paducah Rotary Club

It only happens once a year: Out with the old and in with the new, as the Club changes leadership for the coming Rotary year. A celebration of what the Club has accomplished and an acknowledgment of the challenges ahead.

President Jim Sigler was honored for his outstanding service the past year and gave the Club a rundown of the highlights of his year wielding the gavel.
*Initiated the weekly Featured Rotarian Program
*Revised and modernized the REAP Scholarship By-Laws
*Continued Third Grade Dictionary Program by distributing 808 dictionaries
*Participated in Access to Careers Program to introduce High School students to REAP and Rotary
*Continued Literacy Program for newborns by distributing 1,500 bags on info for new parents
*Collected $655 for the Veterans of Foreign Wars
*Collected $5,001 during the Salvation Army Kettle Drive
*Raised $16,000 for the Rotary Foundation through "Every Rotarian, Every Year" Program
*Donated a total of $81,000 to non-profit organizations
*Awarded $21,000 in scholarships

President Jim said the Club gained 14 new members this year, but lost 22, an anomaly due to the fact that 11 members moved from Paducah. The largest number of members lost due to that reason ever recorded. The Club also mourned the loss of 26 year Rotarian, Greg Rains.

Attendance was also celebrated by the award of pins to those with years of perfect attendance. Those recognized are:
10 years: Tommy Nuckols, Desireé Owen
11 years: Marvin Devers, L.V. McGinty, Ken Schuppert
12 years: Cathy Crecelius, Mike Stone
13 years: Art Feather
14 years: June Antony
15 years: John Harris, Jim Harris
16 years: Chuck Heyduck, Mike Resnick
19 years: Den Johnston
30 years: Dan Key

Gene Katterjohn was recognized as a 56 year member of Rotary. Other Rotarians received pins for the longitude of service:
30 years: Jim Brockenborough, Pedrag Sredl, Ron Stonecipher
35 years: Ken Cooper, David Denton, Joe Powell
40 years: Bob Johnston, Charles Moffit
45 years: Bill Howerton

Rotarian John Harris was awarded a plaque for his generous donation of a location, along with refreshments for many years of Rotary Board of Directors meetings at his downtown restaurant, Whaler's Catch.

President Jim thanked all the officers and members of the board of directors for helping to make his year a success. He especially thanked the Program Chairs for their interesting and informative programs over the past year, featuring such notables as statewide and local office holders, as well as other community leaders from far and wide.

He also thanked the folks "behind the scenes," including Ken Schuppert, Marvin Devers, Art Feather and Chuck Heyduck for the weekly set-up and tear down for meetings, as well as Mary Jane McGuire, our piano player.

Of course, words of the highest praise were saved for Rotary's Executive Secretary Phyllis Russell, who is the glue that keeps it all together. Thanks Phyllis!

Quilt Show Chair John Halsell announced the grand total from this year's Rotary Antique Quilt Show, which raised $38,878, beating last year's total of $37,000. The Club has raised an aggregate of more than $800,000 over the past 19 years for REAP with the Quilt Show.

And our new President is.....
George Shaw accepted the gavel from outgoing President Jim before outlining his goals for the coming year. President George's goals will follow the Rotary International theme of "Rotary Shares."
*Share the Rotary experience and challenged the board and officers to each recruit a new member
*Continue to give $100 per Rotarian to Rotary Internationa. After 3 years, half of those funds come back to the district to be used for grants. This past year, those returning funds paid for the Third Grade Dictionary program.
*Initiate a Rotoract program, which will sponsor college students in community service and serve as introduction to Rotary for young people, who may become the Rotarians of the future.
*Encourage elected and community leaders to do all they can to support and grow the American Quilters Society Quilt Show and the Rotary Antique Quilt Show.

NEXT WEEK

NO MEETING - Have a safe 4th of July holiday!

 JULY PROGRAMS

July 11 - If by July 11 we know what is going on with Mr. Singh, the Quilt Show, and the future of the Executive Inn, Jim Sigler chair of the Paducah/McCracken County Civic Center Corporation will give the club a report.

If we don't know the outcome by then Kristin Williams will give us a program on Paducah's "Think Tank". The Think Tank is a diverse group of Paducah citizens and entrepreneurs who have been working over the last year to study how other successful communities do economic development and to look for opportunities Paducah is missing to support local businesses and entrepreneurs.

July 18 - Summer Festival & State Personnel Cabinet - Kentucky Personnel Cabinet Secretary Brian Crall will tell us about managing Kentucky State Government's human resourses, rebuilding the Cabinet's reputation, and planning for the succession challenges that will result as the baby boomers retire.

Summer Festival Chairman John Pace will announce the music groups and give a 5 minute summary of the 2007 Summer Festival Schedule.

July 25 - Gayle Kaler - Real Steel Magnolias - Robert Harling's 1987 play and the successor movie tells the stories of strong women sharing friendship and enduring life's trails through the banter of a beauty parlor. Business woman and City Commissioner Gayle Kalor has been part of the stories of Paducah's Steel Magnolias as she shared in the life of her customers at Chantilly's. She will change the names to protect the guilty and tell us a few of the better stories.

Rotarian of the Year David Denton

David Denton, a 35 year Rotarian, was honored as the Club's Rotarian of the Year. Dave was described as a catalyst for change in the community, who helped the effort to build Paducah's Engineering School, among other critical projects of importance. He is a past president of Rotary, as well as GPEDC and the Paducah Chamber of Commerce. His list of community involvement activities and successes are too numerous to list, but he was praised with this statement, which sums it up, "He thinks outside the box, speaks his mind and charges ahead."

Dave gratefully accepted the honor, along with flashes of his well-known sense of humor. He pointed out that things will change a lot in the next 35 years, but what won't change is the fact that the Paducah Rotary Club will continue to be the premiere civic club.
