RECYCLENOW PADUCAH!

A volunteer movement is underway to encourage local residents to recycle containers that are currently winding up in the county landfill. RecycleNow, an all-volunteer organization, began offering periodic "drop off" events last year for plastic, paper, tin, aluminum, and glass containers. Merle Paschedag, a founding member who began collecting recyclables behind his Lowertown home, said that in 2007, the group held 11 events and collected 110 tons of recyclable containers. Around 700 donors turned out for their most recent event.

This year, the movement is gaining more momentum with the hope for establishing a permanent drop off site. So far, RecycleNow has 537 corporate, business and individual members. Paschedag is working with the City of Paducah toward applying for a grant to continue the efforts.

RecycleNow will hold a Drop Off event at the Park Avenue Kroger parking lot on Saturday, March 22nd and again on Saturday, April 26th. The group also plans to continue partnerships with schools and local businesses, as well as aN ongoing educational effort by being visible at major festivals and events. Last year, the group''s volunteers collected cups and other throwaways during Barbecue on the River.

The group accepts #1 and #2 recyclable plastic. The designation can be found inside a triangle, usually stamped on the bottom of the container. Paschedag requests that donors rinse out their containers before bringing them to the drop off site.
