"The
Economics of Education"
Dr.
Martin Milkman, Professor of Economics at Murray State University
Dr. Milkman has served
as a Professor of Economics at Murray State University for 21 years
and is currently the director of the Master's Program in Economics.
He and his colleagues produced a benefit cost analysis for the Carson
Center's construction and refined the study which leveraged a resulting
hospitality tax for the City of Paducah
His studies of economics
of education in West Kentucky have led him to believe that the key
to success in this region is to enhance the skills of our workforce.
As we train our students, wherever that may take place, we need to
train them to be adaptable to the changing work environment, the skills
needed, the globalization of the workplace, ups and downs in the economy,
etc.
In the next 30 years,
we will need more professionals in the health industry to serve the
aging population, both the current residents and those moving into
our region. Medical technicians, doctors, and nurses will need to
be adaptable to changes in the medical profession and possess stronger
math skills.
Other professions will
be evolving as well. The accounting field now is no longer bookkeeping.
It is much more analysis now. How will this field evolve in the next
three decades?
How does this information
tie to what's going on in the economy now? The latest statistics show
a 6.3% unemployment rate in our area. Coupled with those discouraged
workers, this means that 10% of our workforce is in a tenuous employment
position. As a labor economist, Dr. Milkman predicts there will be
fewer and fewer jobs out there for unskilled labor and that we need
to emphasize the need for our students to learn employable skill sets
and adaptability to the changing work environment.
