GROWING GIRLS INTO LEADERS

The Girl Scouts have been building courage, confidence and character in young girls since 1912, and the tradition continues with the Kentuckiana Girl Scout Council under the direction of Council CEO Terry Blackwell.

Blackwell said that the Kentuckiana Council serves 22,000 girls in 60 counties, including the 800 girls in the 13 counties that make up the Bear Creek Council in western Kentucky. There are about 3 million Girl Scouts worldwide.

Blackwell says 2 out of 3 successful women have been Girl Scouts, citing the "pillars of leadership" that helped instill courage, confidence and character in girls that allow them to bridge to gap to young womanhood.

1. Discover-Discover a sense of self, to develop positive values, practical skills, critical thinking skills, and not to be afraid of challenges.

2. Connect-How to develop healthy personal and professional relationships, team building skills, conflict resolution skills and an appreciation for diversity in our global society.

3. Empower-Feeling empowered to make the world a better place and to know the power of collective talent can make changes, and not to be afraid of change.

Blackwell said she had "the best job in the world" helping girls to become young women who "lead by doing."

For more information on the Girl Scouts in our area contact the Bear Creek office in Paducah at 443-8704.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fourteen Rotarians are celebrating March birthdays. Betty Higdonclaimed this week's birthday floral arrangement provided by the Flower Gallery in Lone Oak.

Rotarians were treated to a musical number from next Saturday's Charity League Follies, "Have a Nice Day!" performed by several cast members, including our own David Jernigan, who looked suspiciously like Jerry Garcia in his "flashback to the 60's" costume. The musical is set in the late 60's and early 70's and audience members are encourage to dig into their own closets for retro attire when attending the performance at Paducah Tilghman Auditorium. This is the 25th annual Follies, which benefit the Easter Seals Center.

The Rotary Board of Directors will meet , Wednesday, April 16th at 5:15 pm at Whaler's Catch.
