"ICE
STORM 2009"
G.
Kelly Nuckols, President/CEO of Jackson Purchase Energy
Mr.
Nuckols shared a powerpoint presentation of photos taken during the
storm, demonstrating the devastation our community and the JPEC team
witnessed. The Ice Storm of 2009 has been dubbed by emergency workers
as "worse than a hurricane."
The Jackson Purchase Energy
system had the following damage: " 2,000 poles broken " Over 4,000
cross-arms broken " 250 transformers down " 100% of customers were
impacted Luckily, no substations were damaged.
Early estimates show final
costs to run between $15-17 million. Debris removal, pole straightening,
and wire replacement work will continue over the summer.
Through mutual aid agreement
with other state cooperative energy corporations, 317 guest workers
from across the country (including, but not limited to, MN, GA, VA,
TN, NC, and SC). Some very specialized equipment was brought in to
work in the varying terrain and landscapes (often muddy or water-filled
areas).
In addition to line reconstruction,
JPEC forces and resources were leveraged in the following ways: "
To secure hotel rooms, laundry services, and meals for the workers
" Fuel for trucks " Materials for reconstruction " Answering telephone
calls " Relations with County emergency services " Establishment of
remote warehouses " Providing supplies to members with damage to their
service " Scheduling workers for proper rest breaks
Mr. Nuckols praised the
community for its overwhelming support: " Donated meals from individuals,
businesses, and the JPEC Board " Discounted meals from businesses
" Laundry services worked with them on hours " Cards, letters, and
e-mails of support and thanks " Concern for the injured worker and
his family " Use of facilities for remote warehouses
The following individuals
and organizations were strategic in their support of JPEC's mission
to bring power back to its members: " Sherriff's Office " County Judge
Executives, Medical Facilities, City of Paducah/Mayor Paxton's office
" Local bank and credit card suppliers " Fuel suppliers " Local farmers
for the use of tractors " JPEC employees who went beyond the call
of duty.
President John asked that
Dave Clark of Paducah Power stand and both organizations were given
a standing ovation for the work and dedication through the ice storm.
