ROTARY CLUB OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY

VOL. 70, NO. 43- May 27, 2009
(215-360)

Published weekly except, Labor Day, New Years, Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Quilt Show

Terry Reeves, Concierge, EntrePaducah offered an informative presentation of this new organization. EntrePaducah is a service organization aimed at providing resources for entrepreneurs in our region. In 2006, a think tank was formed to address economic development needs in the region. In 2007, the EntrePaducah Advisory Board was formed and in 2008, EntrePaducah was born. In 2009, the first Concierge was hired with a Technology Concierge position established for the summer of 2009.

What does EntrePaducah do? Unite our region's economic development resources to present a "united" front for entrepreneurial start-up companies. Guide entrepreneurs toward resources they need to do business in our area. Recruit entrepreneurs to our region. Retain entrepreneurs who have roots in our region. Educate students and graduates on entrepreneurial resources in our region (including partnerships with Murray State University, West Kentucky Community and Technical College, and the Alpha Project) Educate new or potential entrepreneurs by offering networking opportunities with mentors through EntreForum. The next EntreForum will be Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 7:30 am at the Department of Energy Environmental Center, 115 Memorial Drive in Paducah.

Why is EntrePaducah so important? Large industries are great for a community. . . if you can get them. In 2008, 530,000 new business start-ups opened per month in the USA. With Georgia leading the top 6 states at 590 start-ups per 100,000 people, and Ohio bringing up the bottom 6 states at 190 start-ups per 100,000 people. Kentucky had 360 start-ups for every 100,000 people. Firms of 20 or less generate the majority of new jobs in the US and new jobs from startups are an immediate boost to the economy.

Networks are crucial to start-up success. Mr. Reeves ended his presentation by highlighting the current strategic goals of EntrePaducah: to create a venture capital fund for local entrepreneurs and to foster and facilitate "culture change" towards entrepreneurism.
