KENTUCKY AND WORLD WAR II

It was the "big one." The war that changed Kentucky and the nation forever. December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, transformed the state and its citizens as they joined the war effort. Some would fight, others tended the home fires, but all sacrificed, none more than the ones that would never come home.

Among notable Kentuckians that played a role in the war, include Admiral Howard Kimmel from Henderson, the highest ranking Naval officer at the time, who was in command of Pearl Harbor; and Rosie the Riveter, whose character was inspired by a real life native of Somerset, Kentucky.

Dr. Jim Klotter, a Kentucky Historian and Professor of History at Georgetown College, said his study of the war and its resulting sacrifices, triumphs and tragedies, produced four conclusions.

1. The citizens of Kentucky and the U.S. emerged from the war into a period of unparalleled prosperity. The war effectively ended the suffering of the Great Depression. Personal income doubled while savings increased due to shortages and rationing. The American war machine cranked into a global economic powerhouse, setting the stage for the modern achievements of the 20th Century.

2. The war also set the stage for desegregation. It was said the blacks who fought in World War II won a victory both overseas and at home. Women had also earned more freedom as many worked outside the home for the first time to fill the jobs left behind by those serving overseas.

3. About eight thousand Kentuckians would never see the Bluegrass again, their graves scattered all over the world. Their families would be changed forever.

4. Those who did return home were also changed forever. Some could be called, "The Living Dead," who were shattered by what they had seen and what they had done. Others returned with a more positive outlook on their own lives emboldened and matured by their contribution to the war. Many took advantage of the new GI Bill to further their education and their careers.

Dr. Klotter said we should never forget the sacrifices that were made, and to continue to celebrate the victories achieved by this generation of Kentuckians, who will live in on in our minds and our memories.

Special thanks to our own David Denton, who sponsored Dr. Klotter's speech through the Kentucky Chatuauqua program.
