ROTARY CLUB OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY
"Don't be afraid of the impossible!"
said Dr. Ephraim McDowell, who transported Rotarians back in time
to the early 1800's of Kentucky's frontier when he performed ground
breaking surgery that would secure his place in the history of surgery.
Dr. McDowell, of Danville, had already won a regional reputation as
a renowned surgeon, but any thought of abdominal surgery was considered
too impossible even by the most respected surgeons of Europe, let
alone a country doctor from Kentucky. McDowell said only such frontier doctor could have made it possible because it was he, who had witnessed farmers opening the abdomens of their livestock and witnessing the fact they survived. The surgeon often traveled far from Danville to treat patients, which included James Polk and a relative of Andrew Jackson. On one of his journeys, he met 46 year old Jane Todd Crawford of Green County. It was thought the woman was pregnant with twins, but she had not delivered and was in excruciating pain. McDowell determined that she was actually suffering from a large ovarian tumor. He asked the woman if she would travel to his home in Danville for an experimental surgery that could result in death. With little to loose, she agreed. On Christmas Day, 1809, McDowell performed the surgery under no anesthesia with a prayer tucked into his pocket and a patient who sang hymns to distract herself from the pain. Remarkably, McDowell successfully removed a 22-pound tumor from her body. Five days later Jane Crawford was out of bed and was able to travel home by horseback less than one month later. She lived for another 32 years. McDowell went on to perform the surgery 11 more times with only one fatality. However, it wasn't until the 1840's and '50's that McDowell's accomplishment became widely publicized. The program, presented by L. Henry Dowell of Harrodsburg is part of the Kentucky Humanities Council - Chautauqua Series and was brought to Rotarians today by Dr. and Mrs. Wally Montgomery
