A NEW ERA FOR THE PADUCAH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Paducah Symphony Orchestra is celebrating it's 30th anniversary with a new and progressive executive director. Darlene Dryer comes to the PSO from New Jersey and asks, "What can the Paducah Symphony do for you?"

The symphony has a long heritage of providing quality musical programs, as well as educational outreach to area students, and Dryer is implementing a new program called Music for a Cause. The PSO is teaming up with other local non-profit organizations in producing concerts for fun and profit.

For example, the PSO teamed up with Paducah's historic Metropolitan Hotel for a Pops concert featuring Dee Daniels in a tribute to Ray Charles last month. The Paducah chapter of the American Red Cross is another organization that has signed on as a partner.

So far this season, patrons have enjoyed two performances in the Ella Mae Read Classical Series, which will be completed in the spring with a performance by winners of the PSO's Young Artist Competition, entitled "The Planets," which will also be a partnership with Paducah's Challenger Learning Center on March 1st. On April 19th, the series concludes with a performance by the symphony and the symphony chorus.

For the upcoming holidays, there will be a new holiday daytime performance for children on December 8th, "A Child's Christmas",followed by an evening performance featuring Abby Burke and the PSO Chorus.

Another program to look forward to is the February 16th performance of The Music of John Williams, who wrote the popular theme songs for many feature films and tv shows, including Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and more.

Ticket prices are reasonable, and as Dryer pointed out, make great holiday gifts for friends and family. All performances are held at the Carson Four Rivers Center.

For more information call the PSO office at 444-0065 or stop by the office at 2101 Broadway.

VETERANS DAY

November 11, 2007

Veterans Day, formally Armistice Day, holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all those, living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces in wartime. Some states observe the holiday on November 11 and others on the fourth Monday of October. Armistice Day was proclaimed in 1919 to commemorarte the termination (at 11 AM on November 11, 1918) of World War I. On the first anniversary of the truce, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclaimation eulogizing fallen Allied soldiers and referring to November 11 as Armistice Day. It became a holiday in the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Canada.

The holiday acquired its present name and broadened significance in the U.S. in 1954. In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetary. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River andd the city of Washington becuame the focal point of reverence for America's veterans. We honor and thank all of our Rotarians that are veterans.
