ROTARY CLUB OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY
"Fueling the Nuclear Renaissance" Robert Van Namen, Senior Vice-President of uranium enrichment for USEC, Inc A resurgence for nuclear fuel may
give Paducah's gaseous diffusion plant an extension of its operating
life, says Robert Van Namen, Senior Vice President of USEC.
As domestic and global demand increases for power the bigger role
becomes for nuclear energy and the role Paducah's plant in the process. Van Namen said natural gas, coal and hydro, which provide most of the world's power can't continue to meet the demand for power generation that will grow by 30% in the U.S. and by 50% globally by 2030. Nuclear power can help meet the needs, yet doesn't emit harmful greenhouse gases. Another bright light for the Paducah plant is that spent nuclear reactor fuel can be recycled and re-enriched to be used again. Uranium depleted 20 to 30 years ago is now a valuable asset. Van Meter says 36 nuclear reactors are currently under construction around the world and another 100 are in the planning and approval process, but another 1,000 reactors would be needed worldwide by 2020 to meet the growing energy demands. Paducah is the largest uranium enrichment facility in the U.S. with 76 acres under roof. It is also the largest consumer of power in the nation, and has a contract for electric power through 2012 with TVA, which relies heavily on coal-fired power plants. The volatility in coal and other commodities prices have meant an increase in power costs. Van Meter says economical power costs will also play a role in determining the future of the Paducah plant.
