Working to Make a Difference in Paducah

WPSD welcomed Scott McGee as its evening anchor of its 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 broadcast in July of this year. A talented investigative reporter with 12 years experience, Scott is passionate about providing information to the people of Paducah in order to enable viewers to make informed decisions about matters that affect them on a local and national level.

Scott is excited to be in Paducah after having spent the previous 8 years in Phoenix. He applauds Paducah for continuously reinventing itself and withstanding the economic pressures that are common to small communities. He explained that covering news in this area presents a unique challenge. Viewers of WPSD are spread across a four state region, and often viewers' interests lie in news that directly affects them in their neighborhoods. He is challenged to report news on a large geography and make that news interesting to everyone in the WPSD viewing area. His current goal at WPSD is to do just that.

Scott also spoke to Rotarians about upcoming changes to the way we currently view our TVs. Effective January 2009, stations will no longer broadcast analog signals. TVs that are not equipped with digital satellite or digital cable boxes will not be able to receive the digital signals without a digital TV converter box. A $40 rebate will be available to those individuals who must purchase the converter box. Unfortunately the end of analog broadcasts will also mean the end of WPSD's 87.7 FM radio broadcast.

When fielding questions, Scott was presented with a question that he says that media representatives hear often: "Why is the news that is reported often bad news?" He explained that unfortunately good news can often wait, whereas bad news must be reported immediately. He also explained that he feels fortunate to be in Paducah where there are far more good news stories reported than in markets where he has previously reported. A bigger concern for Scott: when bad news is no longer news.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Seventeen Rotarians are celebrating birthdays in October. Jeff Steiner was the winner of the weekly birthday floral arrangement from The Flower Galley.

The Rotary Board of Directors will meet today at 5:15 pm at Whaler's Catch.

President George announced that the Board of Directors approved the proposal for the creation of a Rotaract program for young men and women ages 18 - 30. This program is designed to bring idealistic, energetic, and committed young men and women into the Rotary family. The program teaches the founding principles that Rotary was built upon. For the project to be successful, we must recruit individuals who fit this demographic. Rotarians are encouraged to think of young men and women they know who might be interested in participating in this program. A sign-up sheet will be available at next week's meeting. This list will be used to send out invitations to prospective members to attend an informational meeting to be held in the upcoming weeks.

NEW MEMBER PROPOSED

Upon recommendation of the Classification and Membership Screening committees, the Board of Directors, the following person has been proposed for membership in the Rotary Club of Paducah. Objections must be filed in writing to the club secretary within seven (7) days. Melanie McNeill of Paducah Bank; proposed by George Shaw; Classification of Banking/Trust Management

FEATURED ROTARIAN

This week's featured Rotarian is Tina Mundy. Tina is a Private Banking Officer with Regions Bank. She has been a Rotarian since 2005. Since joining she has served on the Family of Rotary Committee, the Quilt Show Committee, the Charity Committee, and the Fund Raising & Social Committee. She also provides service to a number of community organizations including the Citizens Foster Review Board, the American Cancer Society, Lourdes Women's Community Foundation, the Leadership Foundation for the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce and she is President-Elect for Paducah River City BPW. Tina enjoys reading and travel. She lives in Paducah with her husband, Jack, and daughter, Madison, who is a Sophomore at Lone Oak High School. An intriguing fact about Tina: she once starred in a television commercial for women's clothing.
