"A Polio Free World"

Dr. Dee Boswell

For more than 30 years, Rotarians have been focused on eradicating the deadly childhood disease of polio all around the world. Fellow Rotarian, Dr. Dee Boswell, a retired cardiologist from Centralia, Illinois, has been actively involved in Rotary's efforts to immunize children since 1980, when Rotary International was first asked by polio vaccine inventor, Dr. Albert Sabin to get involved.

By 1985, Rotary International had pledged to raise $250 million toward providing the oral vaccine to children in all parts of the world. Rotary's success was acknowledged by the World Health Organizaiton, Unicef and the CDC, when the four organzations came together to form the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, which continues to this day.

At that time there 350,000 new cases of polio annually, but the Polio Plus program managed to reduce that number to only 700 cases by 2001, and Rotary was well on track to meet its goal of eradicating polio completely by 2005. Unfortunately, in 2002 something happened to derail the effort.

Muslin fundamentalist parents in Northern Nigeria and Northern India began to refuse to allow their children to take the oral vaccine and reported polio cases ballooned again to 2,000. Dr. Boswell, who has traveled to both countries to immunize children, says the cases number more than 1,300 in those areas today.

Over the years, Dr. Boswell has gone to India, Nigeria and Niger to assist in the polio immunization programs sponsored by Rotary International. As volunteers, they paid their own expenses including air fare, food and lodging. On June 17, 2008, he was awarded the International Service Award for a Polio-free World at the National Conference of Rotary International in Los Angeles.

He reminded the Rotarians the fight against polio is not over, but because of Rotary's Polio Plus, some five million children have been spared death, illness and handicap from polio.

Rotarians are asked to fill the orange Unicef boxes on the lunch tables this week and next week to continue funding the fight against Polio.
