Seven State Track Championships in Eight Years
Paducah
Tilghman track coach, Randy Wyatt, has quite the impressive resume.
He was the first eighth-grader to win the 100 & 200 meter dash at
the Kentucky High School State Track Meet. He was the first freshman
to win the Triple Crown in Track & Field. In 1987 he was named National
Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year, and has also been named a High
School Track All-American. In 1999, he became Paducah Tilghman High
School's Varsity Track coach.
When Coach Wyatt started
his coaching career with PTHS the track program had many deficiencies.
It had only 8 returning players, 5 ½ uniforms, no warm-ups, and
a track that was in very poor condition. Regardless, the team was
expected to win the state championship. To test his team, Randy
selected the best player on the team and made an example of him.
Then and there he set the expectation: you do what is asked of you
or you leave the team. The exercise was designed to instill discipline
in his team members.
The team's discipline
was tested at the state championship that year. Coach Wyatt had
never coached a team before. In his late 20's, the players saw him
more of a peer and less as a coach, and treated him as such. He
warned them the night before the championship that if they did not
take the meet seriously they would lose. The next day the undisciplined
team lost by 1 ½ points as a result of a false start. He vowed they
would never lose again and they haven't. The track team has won
the state championship seven of the eight years that Coach Wyatt
has been a fixture at PTHS. He credits the foundation of discipline
that he instills among his members for those wins.
For Coach Wyatt, winning
a state title is not the glorious part of his career. He takes the
greatest amount of enjoyment from working with students who come
from difficult backgrounds - those who are not expected to live
a successful life - and seeing the life changes that their involvement
in his program has upon their lives and their future.
