"Fishin'
for Big Bucks"
FLW Outdoors,
which promotes bass tournament fishing worldwide, is another of western
Kentucky's best kept secrets. Founded in 1979 on the shores of
Kentucky Lake, FLW has become the world's largest fishing tournament
organization in the world, employing 85 at their Benton headquarters,
and another 170 at satellite offices in Minnesota and Arkansas.
Dave
Washburn, Director of Administrative Operations for FLW, said
bass fishing is big business for not only the fishermen, but for the
communities that host the tournaments. He said lake and river communities
cast their own lures to hook one of the 230 events each year organized
by FLW because of the $1 million to $4 million economic impact the
local economy reels in from hosting a tournament.
Some 40 million U.S Fishing enthusiasts
spend $45 billion a year on gear and travel to enjoy the sport,
but its popularity has spread to the countries through FLW's Outdoors
TV show, which is the most widely distributed fishing show in the
world.
The numbers show an explosive growth
in fishing's popularity. In 1980, FLW held 12 tournaments with $20,000
in prize money. Today, more than 94,000 tournament entrants compete
for nearly $10 million in prizes, including a winner take all $1 million
tournament. FLW has attracted numerous national sponsors, including
Wal Mart, BP, GM, the National Guard and many others.
FLW will host a tournament on Kentucky
Lake next June 11th through the 14th, along with its popular Family
Fun Zone at the Regional Special Events Center in Murray, and once
staged a 2005 All American Tournament in Paducah.
