THE SOLUTION IS EDUCATION

In 1998, Dr. Michael McCall became the President of Kentucky's Community and Technical College System. Since his appointment as President, Dr. McCall has achieved many successes. These successes include the merging of 28 community and technical colleges into 16 accredited comprehensive community and technical colleges, the expansion of the number of academic and technical programs offered, the enhancement of services offered to employers which provide workforce training opportunities, and improved access to postsecondary education in response to community needs.

According to Dr. McCall, continued success is dependent upon the system's ability to respond to three challenges: the changing economy which has become more cyclical and technology driven, the shift in workforce demographics driven by the large number of individuals approaching retirement, and the business community's need for skilled workers.

KCTCS is doing a number of things to respond to these challenges. First, the system is working with its K-12 partners to provide students with access to programs to improve workforce readiness. Second, through the development of a new Virtual Learning initiative, KCTCS will be providing access to degree programs available entirely online. This program will not only enable students to attend class anytime, anywhere, but it will also be supported 24/7 with the counseling and advising services necessary to ensure student success. Finally, KCTCS will be addressing the business community's need for skilled workers through its Workforce Competitive Initiative. This program seeks to offer professional development to workers already in the workforce, delivering targeted education to them in a manner that is convenient and accessible. The goal is to enroll students and educate them in a manner that meets the community's needs.

A critical component is the alignment of business leaders, business needs, and educational providers. To meet these objectives, continued research, community commitment, and the development of solid relationships is critical. Business needs and challenges will be ever evolving, but the solution will always remain the same. That solution is education.

The Rotary Board of Directors will meet Wednesday, November 14th at 5:15 pm at Whaler's Catch. The meeting has been moved up one week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

As a reminder, Rotarians are encouraged to think of young men and women ages 18 - 30 that might be interested in participating in a newly forming Rotaract program sponsored by our club. A sign-up sheet will be circulated around next week's meeting. This list will be used to send out invitations to prospective members to attend an informational meeting to be held in January.
