Terry Shockley, District Governor
for District 6710 of Rotary International
District Governor & Mrs. Jo Shockley are traveling
the district visiting clubs. They are seeing hands-on how clubs are
each making a difference in their respective communities. Mr. Shockley
opened his remarks with complements to the club on our STAR status
and challenged us to repeat that performance by donating $100 per
year to the Rotary Foundation.
Rotary does wonderful work around the world.
As an illustration, Mr. Shockley asked us to envision what the world
might look like without Rotary. Without Rotary, there would be:
- 1,000 more cases of Polio each year.
- 37,000 fewer ambassadorial scholars promoting cultural understanding
and world peace
- 60 fewer Rotary World Peace Scholars
- 60,000 fewer participants in Group Study Exchanges
- No 3H programs "
- 24,000 fewer matching humanitarian project grants in 170 countries
- 33,000 fewer club projects and hometown impact.
30,000 children are dying every day from preventable
diseases. When he discovered this, International
Rotary President D.K. Lee asked Rotary Clubs world-wide to help
solve this problem and made 2008-2009 the year to "Make
Dreams Real."
Goals of Rotary International: There are a number of goals Rotary
addresses, but the top priority goal is to eradicate polio. Rotary
has made significant progress in this area over its existence and we
are on the brink of eradicating it entirely. Other areas of emphasis
for Rotary International are: Water, Health and Hunger, Literacy,
Family of Rotary, and Reduction of Child Mortality.
District Priority Goals: District 6710 has the following
as goals:
-
Finish the promise Rotary made to the children
to eradicate polio. We are 99% there.
-
Increase membership: Membership recruitment is
the responsibility of each individual member. (Hand out a "What's
Rotary?" card and invite someone to Rotary with you next week!)
-
Improve the lives of children and reduce the mortality
rate
-
Continue Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program
with sponsors
-
Raise $200,000 in Annual Fund
-
Support the Rotary International Challenge Grant
to raise $100,000,000 from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
-
Support leadership development
District Gov. Shockley left us with the following questions
to ponder:
-
What are WE as a CLUB
going to do to "Make Dreams Real."
for the children of PADUCAH?
-
What are WE as a club going to do to
"Make Dreams Real." for the children of our DISTRICT?
-
What are WE as a club going to do to
"Make Dreams Real." for the children of our WORLD?
