IT'S ALL ABOUT THE "VISION"

Winston Bennett's father gave him a "vision" at the age of six years. While watching the University of Kentucky Wildcats play basketball on TV, his father asked, "Can you see yourself doing that some day?"

He could and he did. Winston went on to be an All American, Kentucky's Mr. Basketball, a stand-out player for the Wildcats, and to have a successful pro career with the Cleveland Caveliers and the Miami Heat.

Bennett left the pros and joined U.K. coach Rick Pitino on staff, assisting the Wildcats in capturing the 1996 NCAA Championship, and heading up their recruitment efforts.

He is now bringing his "vision" and expertise to the Mid-Continent University's Men's basketball program, where he has only been on the job for two months, but if his presentation is an example of what is to come, the Cougars will not lack for enthusiasm.

Bennett colorfully recounted a play by play of his first NBA game starting as a guard against Michael Jordan and his world championship Chicago Bulls. Bennett told of his glee in containing Jordan to 4 points in the first half, only to have his hopes dashed in the second half when Jordan scored an astounding 65 points.

Bennett said, "You can half a great quarter, a great half, but that's not a whole season. You have to put all those parts together."

Which is what he's trying to do with the student athletes at Mid-Continent. Bennett says he's in a unique situation in being able to coach the varsity teams and two junior varsity teams, which allows him the ability to recruit a greater number of players.

Bennett also made a plea for Rotarians to help Mid-Continent attain a $4 million fund raising goal to construct a Student Activities Center. The complex would house facilities for the men's and women's basketball teams, the volleyball team, and provide a place for all students to congregate. Until that facility can be built, the Cougars must play at the Mayfield High School gym.

They kick off their season against Brescia in Owensboro on Nov. 7th. The Cougars open their Home schedule against Alice Lloyd College on Nov. 10th at 4 p.m. at Mayfield High School.

Coach Bennett and his family reside in Lone Oak.
