"A
High School for the 21st Century"
Tim
Heller,Superintendent, McCracken County Schools
Discussions
about a possible merger of McCracken County's three high schools will
be revisited following research into building designs for a proposed
new facility for Lone Oak High School. Although the McCracken County
School Board won't be expected to vote on the issue until December.
Superintendent Tim Heller believes it's an idea whose time has
come.
Director of Instruction, Dr. Barbara
Vick, was put in charge of the Vision Team investigating
possible building designs formed in March. The group became impressed
with two schools, one in Maine and the other in South Carolina, based
on the "small learning community concept."
Under this concept, the students
are grouped heterogeneously by class grade in what are sometimes called,
"Houses". For example, Groups of 80 to 100 freshman primarily
remain with the same teachers in one part of the building, and are
served by a separate vice principal and guidance counselor.
Dr. Vick said the concept lends itself
to providing students with a more "career focused" program of study.
At the two high schools visited, each had a successful culinary arts
program, as well as programs for healthcare, law, engineering, business
management and other careers.
The group found that the graduation
rates, attendance, and test scores were also higher at these schools.
Other positives included a more safe environment, more collaboration
between teachers and students, and an overall more positive culture
the engendered meaningful relationships.
Heller said the new high school will
likely cost about $50 million. A series of three town meetings
will be held to discuss the plans with community residents on Sept.
22nd at the Heath High School Cafeteria, Sept. 29th at the Reidland
Elementary Gym, and Sept. 30th at the Lone Oak Elementary Gym. All
meetings begin at 6:30 pm.
