POPULAR NFL PLAYER VISITS PADUCAH

Tennessee Titans fans know all about Frank Wycheck, arguably the most popular player who ever played in Nashville, and one of the best tight ends in the NFL, due to the heart he demonstrated for his team, the game and the fans.

After retiring from the Titans in 2003, he began a career in radio and continues his popularity with fans by providing color commentary of the games for the Tennessee Titans Radio Network.

"I love the sounds and the smells of the stadium and the fans," he said.

Wycheck's skills and personality, both on and off the football field, made him a fan favorite in the early days of the Titans. He joined the Houston Oilers from the Washington Redskins in 1995, just before the Oilers' announced their move to Tennessee. He was credited with helping the team bond with the Nashville community, in what many may remember as a rocky transition. While awaiting construction of a stadium, the team played in Memphis, and later at Vanderbilt University.

"He gave the team roots," said fellow commentator and head of the Tennessee Titan Radio Network, Larry Stone.

Number 89 also racked up the 4th most receptions by a tight end in the NFL, and was a central figure in one of the most unforgettable NFL plays of all time, "The Music City Miracle" against the Buffalo Bills in the 1999-2000 Playoffs. That play, made with the Bills one point ahead, led to a 75 yard touchdown and a win for the Titans.

Wycheck and the Titans then suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl when Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard short of the end zone, losing to the St. Louis Rams 23-16.

The Titans have not enjoyed as much success in the years following Wycheck's departure, but were 8-8 in 2006. Wycheck has higher hopes for this season. "The team is starting to resemble the teams of our beginnings," he said.

Commenting on recent controversies with NFL players, such as Michael Vick, and the Titans' own PacMan Jones, he said, "There's more to being in the NFL than just collecting the checks." Titans fans would no doubt agree that Frank Wycheck always did more than "just collect the checks," on and off the playing field.

The Titans play the 0-2 New Orleans Saints in the Super Dome this Monday night. The game is broadcast on Paducah radio station WKYX-AM.

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK JOE POWELL

The fun part of this job, if there is a fun part, is getting to talk to fellow Rotarians and really find out about them. When I select the featured Rotarian each week, I give them a call and ask them to tell me about themselves. I usually get "oh, I'm not very interesting".so then I have to start digging, or in today's case, "mining", for information and trying to pull together a theme for the introduction.

Today's Featured Rotarian is Joe Powell. Joe is a native Texan, but came to Paducah with his bride, Nancy.

Joe received his BA from Abilene Christian University. Joe did graduate work at the University of Texas, but received his Masters in Ceramic Engineering from Ohio State University. I asked Joe, "exactly what is a Ceramic Engineer" and he told me in a word, a "crackpot!"

After graduation, he and Nancy moved to Paducah and Joe started to work at Old Hickory Clay Company, a company that was started by Nancy's grandfather in 1918. Joe tells me that he worked on all levels of the totem pole.starting at the bottom. Today Joe is CEO of the company Old Hickory Clay Company mines a high refractory clay, called ball clay. They have mines in Graves, Hickman and Carlisle counties and in Weakley County in Tennessee. Ball Clay is an extremely rare mineral that is only found a few places in the world, and the clay activity in our area produces some of the finest ball clay in the US. This is a type of clay that has been used in such products as the AC Spark plug, bonding material for the space shuttle bricks and familiar ceramic products made by Kohler, Crane and American Standard.

Joe and Nancy have three sons and 7 grandchildren. All 3 of the sons have attended Abilene Christian University and Joe currently is a Trustee at the University.

Joe's professional and civic involvement has included being a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society and service on such boards as: Paducah School Board Citizens Bank Board of Directors The Carson Center Board

Joe attends the Broadway Church of Christ, where he recently retired as a church elder, after 33 years of service.

He also is involved in and has served as the Chairman of World Christian Broadcasting, a non-profit organization that communicates the "Good News' via shortwave broadcast to locations around the globe. The first broadcast station is located in Anchor Point Alaska and has been on the air since 1983 and the second location is currently under construction in Madagascar.

Joe has been a Rotarian since 1971. He served as Club President in 1979-1980 and became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1988. Joe is now an honorary Rotarian.

I asked Joe about his hobbies and he tells me that he is a "sports nut". (So far he has described himself as a crackpot and a nut!) He likes to watch basketball and track & field.

And his interesting fact is that he played as a quarterback while at ACU and they played against Florida State and beat them!
