"Why
Should We Care About Energy?"
John Talbot and Russ Pogue, Big
Rivers Electric Co-Op
Kentuckians have enjoyed relatively
inexpensive electric costs for years, but John Talbert, Director
of External Affairs for Big Rivers Electric Co-Op, says that will
change in future for a number of reasons, ranging from federal clean
air legislation to the forces that can interrupt sources of energy,
such as wars and hurricanes.
Kentuckians
use 24% more electricity than the national average primarily because
rates are cheaper due to our reliance on coal fired electricity.
Rates here are 33% less than the national average translating
to residential rates that are 16% less.
Talbert said the effects of legislation
now being debated in the U.S. Senate could push Kentuckians electric
rates up 159% by 2030. The Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act
targets CO2 emissions, which coal produces. He says Kentuckians will
get hit personally, and the state will lost one its best economic
development recruiting tools: cheap electricity. He said everyone
needs to be concerned about conserving electricity, and it's never
been easier thanks to a revolution in energy efficient products and
tools that are now available. Most are relatively painless to consider,
such as installing heat pumps, using compact fluorescent bulbs, adding
insulation, buying energy efficient appliances and programmable thermostats,
for example all of which, not only reduce your consumption, but save
money on your monthly bills.
For those wanting to learn more about
energy efficiency, Jackson Purchase Energy will hold a Home Energy
Expo on Saturday, October 18th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Paducah Regional
Sports Plex just west of the Kentucky Oaks Mall on Highway 60.
Free hands on demos, classrooms and vendors will be there to help
you make your home more energy efficient. JPECC will also be giving
away $26,000 in door prizes from insulation to windows to heat pumps.
Everyone will get free CFL light bulbs.
